Referee Michael Oliver informed both managers that something had been said between the players
Stars including Jordan Henderson and Gabriel Magalhaes squared up after Arsenal were given a controversial penalty, before referee Michael Oliver spoke to both managers about the incident
Arsenal and Liverpool are both being investigated by the FA following a melee during their Premier League clash on Sunday.
There was an angry confrontation between the players during the match, which was one of the best games of the season so far. One flashpoint occurred in the second half after referee Michael Oliver gave a penalty to Arsenal.
At a crucial point in the game with the scores locked at 2-2, it was no doubt a significant moment and Oliver had to run to the touchline to deal with Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp – who were both kicking off.
And it has turned out the referee went over to make the managers aware of something that one of the players was alleged to have said to the other. Since then, the matter has been referred to the Football Association.
An investigation is now pending, with the FA set to speak to the match officials before launching further action on the matter.
An FA spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident that took place during the match between Arsenal and Liverpool. We are in dialogue with the match officials and will review the details of the incident.”
Bukayo Saka went on to score the resulting penalty, which ended up being the winning goal in a 3-2 victory for the Gunners. It saw Arteta’s men return to the top of the Premier League over Manchester City.
