Former Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has entered the betting market to become the next manager of Wigan Athletic.

The 42 year-old finds himself without a job for the first time since 2018 after being relieved of his duties at Villa Park last month, with the club flirting with relegation following a disappointing start to the 2022/23 Premier League season under his watch.

Villa’s search for a new manager was fairly swift with Unai Emery being appointed to the role shortly after Gerrard’s exit in the aftermath of the 3-0 defeat to Fulham on October 20. Wigan are on the search for a new manager after Leam Richardson was sacked by The Latics because of an eight-game losing streak.

Gerrard is currently priced at 16/1 with Sky Bet to succeed Richardson, with the former Villa boss possibly in line for a return to the managerial hot-seat sooner rather than later. Gerrard’s assistant coach Neil Critchley, who departed Blackpool this summer to join the Villa coaching staff, is 6/1 to take the role.
