West Ham must sack David Moyes now if three recent insider claims are true or the situation could get messy.
Moyes finds himself under huge pressure at West Ham after overseeing a woeful Premier League campaign so far compared to the last two seasons.
They are seasons in which the Scot has been making history with the Hammers. In 2020-21 Moyes’ West Ham recorded their highest ever Premier League points total of 65, missing out on a Champions League spot by a solitary win and finishing sixth.
Last term saw a seventh place finish which secured European qualification – and indeed now last 16 European knockout football – in consecutive seasons for the first time in the club’s existence.
They are – justifiably – the reasons Moyes has been publicly backed by West Ham’s majority stakeholder David Sullivan to turn things around after the World Cup break.
But tensions are high given the context. The poor Premier League campaign comes against the backdrop of having spent a whopping £170m on eight new players in the summer.
The Hammers are two places and one point above the bottom three and have scored just 12 goals all season – the joint second worst in the top flight. And West Ham have also been sent crashing out of the League Cup at the first hurdle to Blackburn’s reserves.
The Hammers malaise is not new this season either. Moyes has overseen just 13 Premier League wins in West Ham’s last 42 games.
With West Ham’s owners publicly backing their manager, there will be no wielding of the axe at the London Stadium over the six-week World Cup break.
That in itself is driving fierce debate among Hammers fans. A growing section of them want Moyes out and feel a more modern manager is needed to transform the way West Ham play and get the best out of what is an impressive squad – on paper at least. Those supporters feel now would be the ideal time to make such a change.
Others feel Moyes deserves more time given the marvellous job he has done in east London. And – for now at least – the owners clearly agree.
Yet the noise coming out from inside the club has suggested that behind closed doors the backing is not as unequivocal as it might seem.
In fact West Ham must sack Moyes now if three recent insider claims are true or the situation could get messy.
There have been three substantial claims from inside the club of late which, if true, suggest it is totally and utterly pointless keeping Moyes on regardless of where you, as a fan, stand on the matter.
Since the 2-0 defeat to Leicester ahead of the World Cup break, insiders speaking to Claret and Hugh have made a series of claims which will leave fans wondering why the owners are wasting this six-week break because the belief in Moyes is clearly not unwavering.
Another claim suggests the board are reluctant to trust Moyes to spend any significant funds in the January window after some questionable signings in the past year.
And now the manager’s use of academy stars – or rather his lack of use of the club’s talented youngsters – has been heavily criticised by an anonymous insider.
If this really is the situation and feeling inside the club regarding the manager, then regardless of whether fans want him to stay or not, where is the future in that?
All West Ham are doing is kicking the can down the road and wasting a massive window to make a change.
Either back the manager unequivocally without caveats and question marks or make a clean break while there are a host of top managers out there looking for work.
