Noel Whelan has claimed a potential move for Kylian Mbappe to Liverpool would be an “exciting proposition” for club and player.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 23-year-old superstar could be the long-term replacement for Reds icon Mohamed Salah.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano (11 October), Mbappe is “not happy” at current club Paris Saint-Germain and wants to leave “as soon as possible”.

The French international told The Telegraph earlier this year (23 May) that he had spoken to Jurgen Klopp about a potential move to Liverpool because it is the favourite club of his mother.

However, Mbappe eventually chose to pledge his future to PSG by renewing his contract until June 2025.

The World Cup winner has scored 183 goals in 230 games since joining the French giants for a reported eventual fee of £157million.

Whelan claimed the versatile forward would be a “fan favourite” at Anfield.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think everyone would like Mbappe in their side.

“I can’t think of any manager who would say no to him.

“Would he fit Liverpool’s style of play? Yes. Would he fit their criteria of signing young players? Yes.

“Would he be a fan favourite? Yes.

“Salah is coming into the back end of his career now, and when you look for a replacement, Mbappe stands out like a sore thumb.

“If they can afford him, I think it’d be a sensational proposition for all parties and I think Klopp would get the best out of him.

“I can see it happening, for sure. But he won’t be cheap so they’ll have to look at the finances.”
