In the aftermath of Argentina’s priceless 2-0 victory over Mexico at the 2022 World Cup, Lionel Messi was called out by boxing superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

The fighter accused Messi of disrespecting his country after watching some footage from the Argentine dressing room.

“He better pray to God that I don’t find him,” Canelo even said in a series of hot-headed tweets.

Since Canelo’s comments went viral, various sporting personalities have called him out.

Messi’s former Argentina teammate Sergio Aguero was one of them and the latest to do so is Mexico’s captain, Andres Guardado.

In an interview with broadcaster TyC Sports, Guardado defended the Paris Saint-Germain superstar and labelled the whole debacle as “silly”.

“I know the person Messi is,” Guardado, said, per the Daily Mail.

“It’s a deal with the staff that when it’s all sweaty, it gets left on the floor. Be it your jersey or rival. Canelo doesn’t know what a dressing room is. It seems silly to me. That shirt was mine, I exchanged it with Leo.”

Fair play, Andres. Hopefully, Canelo will now realise that he was in the wrong – not Messi.

Guardado is a big fan of Messi, something he made abundantly clear back in 2018.

After a match between Real Betis and Barcelona, which the latter won 5-0, Mexico’s captain and leading appearance maker took his son to meet his idol.

The footage of Messi meeting Maximo really is as wholesome as it gets and it regularly goes viral on social media.

Check it out…

No wonder Guardado has leapt to Messi’s defence, eh?

Both players will be bidding to take their respective nations through to the last-16 of the Qatar World Cup on Wednesday evening.

If Argentina beat Poland and Mexico defeat Saudi Arabia, each of them will progress to the next stage.

It’s the most likely outcome from Group C, but in this World Cup full of shocks, you’d be a fool to lump big money on it becoming reality…
