Referee Srdjan Jovanovic took several minutes to confirm Dusan Vlahovic’s goal in BenficaJuventus due to the lack of goal-line technology and Moise Kean’s potential off-side.

There were confusing scenes at the Estadio da Luz when Juventus forward Vlahovic levelled the score against Benfica from a corner kick action. Kean kicked the ball inside the net after a double save from Odysseas Vlachodīmos.

The Italy striker was flagged off-side, so Juventus’ goal was initially disallowed.

It took a few minutes to find out that the ball had already crossed the line when Kean touched it, so the goal was valid. It took so long because tonight’s game is being played without the goal-line technology, which is unavailable due to technical issues, as revealed by UEFA in the morning.

Therefore, the whole action was checked by VAR, taking several minutes for the final response.

Juventus did level the score, but Benfica netted twice in the following 15 minutes, going up 3-1. Juventus must win tonight to keep their qualification hopes alive.
