Former Inter defender Marco Materazzi
Former Inter defender Marco Materazzi thanked Milan for allowing Hakan Calhanoglu to leave and join their intercity rivals.
The 28-year-old Turkish midfielder joined the Nerazzurri last year after leaving the Rossoneri on a free transfer, having spent four years wearing red and black. He’s been an important part of Simone Inzaghi’s squad, scoring 10 goals and providing 16 assists across 61 total appearances for the club.
Speaking to InterTV before the Nerazzurri’s match against Viktoria Plzen, Materazzi gave his thoughts on Calhanoglu and his departure from Milan last year.
“We have to thank our cousins who left him for us and who chitter chatter. We have to thank him, he’s a guy who talks little but does the deeds.
“He runs, he is determined, he is not afraid to go into tackles. He allowed Brozovic to recover calmly, without rushing back. Players like him are welcome.”
The 28-year-old Calhanoglu has played 15 games across Serie A and the Champions League this season, scoring two goals and providing three assists in that time. He has been an important presence in midfield, allowing his teammates like Nicolo Barella and Lautaro Martinez to shine.
Inter have now booked their spot in the Round of 16 of the Champions League following their win over Viktoria Plzen, whilst Milan still need to pick up a positive result against RB Salzburg next week.
